We’re excited to share that our family home has been recently featured in The Design Files—but this space is more than just a home. It’s where Made by Morgen began and where our lives have evolved alongside it..
Over a decade ago, this West Melbourne apartment was where Nick, then in his early 30s and living alone, first started designing and making furniture to fit the space. Those early pieces—crafted with a focus on simplicity, functionality, and natural materials—laid the foundation for what would later become Made by Morgen. Many of those designs have since become staples of our collection, shaping the identity of our business.
Today, this same apartment has transformed again, now filled with the energy of a young family. What started as a space for one has grown into a home that balances design and practicality, adapting to a new way of living while staying true to its original intent. Thoughtful updates, carefully selected materials, and our own handcrafted furniture have helped create a home that balances history, function, and warmth.
This feature offers a glimpse into the place where it all began—a home that continues to reflect our approach to thoughtful design and craftsmanship.

Family Life In One Of Melbourne’s Best Warehouse Apartments

When we last met Made by Morgen founder Nick McDonald at home in 2019, his West Melbourne warehouse apartment had a more industrial feel, featuring a black kitchen, enamel pendant lighting, and darker floors.
Four years, one child, and a DIY renovation later, the apartment is an equally stylish but more fresh and family friendly place to be.
Nick shares how he did it!
